 ROLES OF AFFILIATES

Sister Cities  Association of Cary, Inc. is part of  a local, regional and  international community:

SISTER CITIES COMMISSION

Supporting the Town of Cary Sister Cities Commission (SCC) in its initiatives is the foundation of our purpose.  The Sister Cities Commission, since its founding in 1988 by Cary Town Council, strives to further global understanding and to encourage and assist sister cities relationships between citizens in US communities and cities throughout the world.  The Sister Cities Commission is responsible for policy and direction.  It focuses on the following aspects in building its sister cities relationships:

· Cultural Exchange

· Governance

· Economic Development

· Educational Exchange

TRIANGLE AREA SISTER CITIES

In 2006, Raleigh, Durham and Cary Sister Cities Associations formed a regional force called Triangle Area Sister Cities (TASC).  This group facilitates initiatives that are beneficial to all three associations.  Efforts for regional awareness campaigns are shared.  Members of our associations share reciprocal invitations and benefits between the organizations.

SISTER CITIES INTERNATIONAL

Originally a part of the National League of Cities, Sister Cities International (SCI) became a separate, non-profit corporation in 1967 because of its tremendous growth and popularity.   Under SCI, a non-profit citizen diplomacy network developed between US and international communities in an effort to increase global cooperation at the municipal level.  SCI is a leader in the movement for local community development and volunteer action.  It motivates and empowers private citizens , municipal officials and business leaders to conduct long-term programs of mutual benefit.

HISTORY OF THE SISTER CITIES MOVEMENT

Sister city, county and state affiliations between the United States and other nations began shortly after World War II and developed into a national initiative when President Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed the "People-to-People" program at a White House conference in 1956. Originally a part of the National League of Cities, Sister Cities International became a separate, nonprofit corporation in 1967 because of its tremendous growth and popularity.

President Eisenhower's intention was to involve individuals and organized groups at all levels of society in citizen diplomacy, with the hope that personal relationships, fostered through sister city, county and state affiliations, would lessen the chance of future world conflicts. As a result, many cities have developed relationships with other international cities.

The Sister Cities Association of Cary, Inc. is a community-based  organization open to any individual or business interested in promoting and fostering our sister cities relationships.

Through Sister Cities of Cary memberships, we create a diverse community promoting and benefiting from cooperative exchange programs between our sister cities.  We  are part of a global community working towards world peace,  seeking open dialogues to find unique solutions for improving the quality of urban life and hoping to grow as individuals by expanding our understanding of harmony among nations.

MEMBERSHIP

The Sister Cities Association of Cary, Inc. (SCA) is composed of citizens working together to further the mission of our program.

We encourage all members to be actively involved by attending social cultural events, hosting exchange guests, assisting with fundraisers, planning future events, and participating in awareness campaigns throughout the Triangle area.  We share the benefits of invitations to area events, potential travel discounts, opportunities to serve on committees, and voting rights at meetings.

We celebrate our relationships with our four sister cities and seek opportunities to build relationships one person at a time both here at home and in our exchanges abroad.

The Sister Cities Association works in conjunction with the Sister Cities Commission of the Town of Cary to further global under-standing and to encourage and to assist with sister city relationships.  The goals of the Sister Cities Association are to:

· Exchange ideas and develop friendships with our counterparts in other cultures on a personal basis.

· Establish an identity as members of the international community involved in the process of building world peace.

· Develop a way for the diverse elements of our community to come together  to enjoy and profit from a cooperative program.

· Open dialogues with the people of another culture to find unique  solutions for improving the quality of urban life.

· Participate in a program with a real partner in another country so all members of the community can feel they are contributing to international understanding in a personal way.

· Better understand our own community by interpreting our way of life to the people of another culture.
