Hsinchu City, Taiwan |
BACKGROUND Hsinchu City’s history dates back 400 years making it the oldest city in northern Taiwan. The original inhabitants, an aboriginal tribe, called the city ‘Chuchang’; the present name of Hsinchu City was adopted late in the 19th century. The Qing Dynasty Emperor Guangxu reigned at that time, and under his rule, the city was expanded and a wall surrounding the city was constructed. During the Japanese colonial era, Hsinchu City began producing glass. Famous for its glass production, Hsinchu craftsmen have expanded beyond their initial craft of medical glass to other types of industrial glass. More recently (1960’s) craftsmen began adding decorative glass and Hsinchu City is now recognized as a center for decorative glass products. The Hsinchu Science Park has been quite successful, especially with the semiconductor manufacturers who are based there. The Park has had a significant impact on the economy and Hsinchu City now boasts the highest average wage per citizen in Taiwan. Hsinchu is home to some fine hotels and tourist travel is welcomed. The city is perhaps the best point from which to explore the mountain areas of Hsinchu County. Strong gusts of wind blow in from the Taiwan Strait, earning Hsinchu City the nickname of the 'Windy City'. While an advantage of the wind is keeping the air quality free of pollution, the disadvantage is it brings very cold air into the area around the time of the Chinese New Year Celebrations. Le Touquet, France |
BACKGROUND In 1837, the notary Alphonse Daloz purchased the land comprising Le Touquet. At that time, Le Touquet consisted of dune areas on the Canche Estuary; however, by the end of the century, Le Touquet had become an attractive wooded location by the sea. British enthusiasm for the area as a seaside resort gave rise to the creation of Le Touquet Syndicate Ltd. This company extended the urbanized domain, greatly increased its facilities and developed the resort's activities and hotel trade. The prosperity of Le Touquet is inseparable from the British presence, and its development can be seen from the diversity of Le Touquet's architecture. CLICK ON THE FLAG FOR MORE INFORMATION |

County Meath, Ireland |
BACKGROUND The mysterious allure of Ireland’s legends powerfully resonates through the landscapes of Meath. Man first settled here 8000 years ago, and the country’s lush plains are replete with ancient Celtic monuments, castles and churches. Known as the Royal County, Meath’s colors are green and gold: green for its rich grass pastures, gold for the High Kings of Ireland who reigned there for centuries. For many, the sacred hill of Tara embodies the very soul of Ireland; according to myth, otherworldly peoples like the Formorians and De Dannaan struggled here for temporal and mystical power. From Tara, the warriors of the Fianna rode forth to combat; and Saint Patrick embarked from here on his conversion of the Irish to Christianity. The Boyne Valley was the site of the historic battle of 1690, and is also home to many of Ireland’s most notable Neolithic sites, including Bru na Boinne (the Palace of the Boyne), with its fifteen passage graves, and the massive Newgrange, containing an inner chamber illuminated once a year by the rising sun of the winter solstice. BACKGROUND The source from which Markham draws its name is rich in both resonance and history. In 1791, the Township of Markham was named after William Markham, the Archbishop of York. In 1872, Markham was incorporated and grew to a population of 1,100 by 1891. Increased economic ties with Toronto led to the demise of the farm villages after the turn of the century. Beginning in 1945, the face of Markham began to change rapidly. It was no longer a community whose inhabitants worked locally. Rural Markham disappeared in the face of tremendous urban growth. Throughout this phenomenal growth, Markham's roots endured. Still rich in fertile farmland, Markam stands as Canada's pre-eminent high technology center, known worldwide for innovative products and services. Today, Markham is well known as “Canada's High-tech Capital.” CLICK ON THE FLAG FOR MORE INFORMATION |
