YOUTH IN SISTER CITIES: POWERPOINT PRESENTATION

Text Box: Check back in February for information regarding
2010 Sister Cities International
Young Artists and Writers Competitions.

During June of 2006, I studied abroad in France through a joint program between North Carolina State University and the Catholic University of Lille. This program allowed students from NC State to take classes at the Catholic University of Lille for 4 weeks while earning college credit at NC State. During my stay in France, I was able to visit many places in Europe such as Disneyland Paris in Paris, France, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, and Brugge, Belgium.

One town that I took a trip to was Le Touquet, France, one of Cary's Sister Cities. Le Touquet is a gorgeous resort beach town that is a popular tourist location. I was welcomed by wife of Municipal Councilor Alain Herman, whose very own daughter had spent 2 weeks in Cary during an exchange program back in 2003.

apartments or townhouses. That evening, I was able to meet with Mayor and National Assembly member Léonce Deprez. We talked about continuing and growing our existing relationship between our two towns for the betterment of all. I was able to bring gifts on behalf of Town of Cary such as our Town Flag and glassware with our town emblem. Through this experience, I was even invited to visit the National Assembly in Paris, which is closed to the general public. I was invited to a lunch with Mr. Deprez at the National Assembly where I met other members of the National Assembly. This opportunity could have never happened without the help and hard work of the Town of Cary Sister Cities Commission. It was an opportunity that I shall never forget.

I was given the night to explore. There was so much energy there because France was playing in the Soccer World Cup. I was able to enjoy a crêpe, a wrapped pancake typically filled with foods ranging from ham to chocolate. The best part of the night was at the beach though. I sat on the beach and saw a French sunset looking onto the English Channel.

The next day, Mr. Herman visited me and took me on a mini tour of Le Touquet. He took me to see the estuary where the Somme River connects with the English Channel and other places in Le Touquet. Later in the evening, I was invited to attend a celebration for the Open Gardens in Le Touquet. The Open Gardens is town owned property which is rented out to residents of the town who don't own lawns like families  in

FAQ

A cornerstone of Cary’s Sister Cities Program is our focus on youth involvement.  Through Exchanges, Cultural Initiatives, serving on the Sister Cities Commission, and helping with youth projects, Cary’s youth play an integral role in the success of our program.

Below you will find one of several journals written by a number of our youth describing an experience they had through Sister Cities.  More will be posted in the future.

Also, click on the powerpoint presentation (on the left) designed by some of the youth in our program.  It’s excellent!
